According to Wright, "Teachers who understand second language development and who engage in effective instructional and authentic assessment practices speak to their students and listen to them talk every day. They read with their students and ask them questions about what they read. They read their student's writing and discuss their work with them throughout the school year." This quote from chapter one resonated with me because I am not an ELL student, but I know what it's like and what it takes to learn another language which can be difficult with obstacles along the way. But then conquering on how to speak, read, and write is the best feeling.
Knowledge is power. With that being said, knowledge of languages is beneficial to teachers to think linguistically to integrate their teaching skills to create a language classroom environment. We, teachers, are everything to these students because diversity is expanding in the classroom; therefore, we can be the student's first contact with English. As a teacher, I will do everything to accommodate, support, and encourage my English Language Learners. I want my students to have a fun, enjoyable, and amazing time learning any language they wish to learn because learning should be fun.
Hello Jasmine I like how you stated that you want your students to have fun, enjoyable, and amazing time learning language because I feel like for many ELL students school can be a scary place. Especially for students who are struggling to learn English to suddenly go into a classroom and then be expected to learn and participate in a language that they are not familiar with can be taxing. I also enjoyed the quote that you pulled from the book because I also like the fact that the quote points out how a teacher who helps an ELL student learn is a teacher who talks, listens, and asks students questions. This not only helps the students learn English but also allows the teacher to build a positive relationship with the students so that students are able to share and feel comfortable with their teacher. Great Vblog 1 entry!
ReplyDeleteHi Amber, thanks for commenting! Teachers, we are everything to the students by talking, listening, and having fun. Without this, there is no experience in schools. We are here for the students to be with them and build the beginning foundation of education.
DeleteJasmine,
ReplyDeleteYour teaching philosophy is amazing! I loved the comment in your video of how a second language can be best attained or practiced. It reminds me of the ZPD, Zone of Proximal Development. According to Wright (2019), “children can reach a higher level of knowledge and performance with the support of an adult or other knowledgeable person” (p.59) Learning a new language can be intimidating and stressful but practice goes a long way. Having students practice a second language with their parents creates a safe space for children. Kids will have more interaction and practice to better themselves. Learning anything new is a process. Knowing one has the power to learn makes learning fun!
Hi Beatrice! I love to hear about your experience growing up. The video sounds like you have loving, supportive parents who wanted you to learn English. However, you kept your native language which is special because I feel that children tend to lose their native language to fit into society, that shouldn't be the case. Learning a new language is beneficial to your future. The connection and explanation of the nature of science you had to say was interesting to me because I've never saw it that way but it makes sense with conducting science experiments.
